5 Frugal Things – Bread, Tea, Chicken, Storm & Hummingbird

by Texas Homesteader~

Occasionally I’ll share a short list of 5 Frugal Things I’ve done recently to save time, money and/or the environment. The beauty is that often these 5 frugal things check off all of those categories.

It’s been a while so I thought I’d share a quick list of 5 frugal things I did this week.

Come see 5 Frugal Things we did this week to save some cold, hard cash. It's easy to save money throughout the week if you keep your eyes open. #TexasHomesteader Continue reading

Hitting The Road: Broken Bow, Oklahoma

by Texas Homesteader ~

Every year my siblings get together for what we call a ‘Sibling Trip’. My Brother and his wife, my sister & her hubs, and RancherMan & I pick a fun location and then vacation together. We’ve been to many fun places, but on this occasion my SIL suggested Broken Bow, OK.

I’ve heard of Broken Bow, but I don’t think I’ve ever been there. We’d decided to rent a 3-bedroom, 3 bath cabin so we could all stay together. It had a fully stocked kitchen so we could bring food and cook at the cabin a couple of nights to save some cash. Love it! Let’s get on the road.

We traveled to Broken Bow, Oklahoma for a weekend sibling trip. A delightful cabin was rented and we enjoyed some breweries, restaurants & Bevers Bend state park. #TexasHomesteader

Pecan-Wood Smoked Meat For Pulled Pork Sandwiches

by Texas Homesteader ~

RancherMan keeps our chest freezer filled with wild hog meat. I’ve made many dishes with this lean, mild-tasting wild pork. Many of those recipes are listed below. (Although you could use commercial pork instead)

But recently we were preparing for our annual family reunion. We decided to serve pulled-pork sandwiches with some of this wild-hog meat. But RancherMan wanted to smoke it with pecan wood before shredding it for sandwiches. It turned out Aaaaaaaahhhhh-MAZING!

Delicious Smoked Pork using pecan wood smoke. Delicious. And shredding all that meat can be done in minutes using our shortcut. #TexasHomesteader

Veggie Garden Update: May

by Texas Homesteader

May is typically a great month for veggie gardening in NE Texas.  In May the temps usually haven’t heated up too drastically. And in a normal year there’s still spring rains swinging through each week so you don’t typically have to struggle quite as much with your garden maintenance workload.

C’mon and walk with me through the garden & let’s see what’s “growing” on these days.

It’s grilling season, y’all! And that means you’ll need a good BBQ rub and mop sauce. Boy do I have a treat for you!

RancherMan was planning to smoke a whole grill-full of pork roasts using pecan wood. But he needed a flavorful BBQ Rub & Mop Sauce. And he certainly found a good one!

MYO Simple Craft Paintbrush In A Pinch

by Texas Homesteader ~

The other day I decided to try a gardening hack I’d read about. I wanted to paint some small rocks red to look like strawberries. The idea is to Trick Birds Away From Your Garden Strawberries.

The birds see the bright-red faux berries and decide to swoop in for a little snack. A few pecks of that rock hard ‘strawberry‘ and they decide you’re an awful gardener and move on, leaving future strawberries for your own harvest.

I already had the paint, I already had the rocks, but I didn’t have a small paintbrush. So I decided to make one on the fly.

All I  needed was a tiny scrap piece of absorbent material & an ordinary clothespin.

I needed a small craft paintbrush so I fashioned one in seconds using a piece of repurposed scrap cloth and a clothespin. #TexasHomesteader
