Chicken Update: 21 Weeks – WE HAVE EGGS!

by Texas Homesteader

Back in April we bought day-old straight-run chicks. Three Black Minorcas for their larger body frames and three Ideal 236 for their larger egg-laying abilities.  After the chicks grew their feathers we put them in a mobile chicken tractor and moved them to fresh grass every day.  The chicks grew & grew!

When they outgrew the chicken tractor we moved them into the chicken coop in our 1880’s barn.  We let them out each morning to free range and locked them securely back in the barn each night.

The baby chicks now looked like grown chickens and Interestingly enough the Black Minorca roosters have different colored cheek patches.  We anticipated they would have large white patches and one of them does, but the other on has large red patches on his cheeks instead.

Putting Yourself Out There When You’re Shy

by Texas Homesteader

OK, confession time.  I’m shy.  Not “Oh I don’t like to stand out” shy – PAINFULLY shy.  So shy in fact that it’s hard to be openly friendly to strangers or acquaintances.  It’s not that I don’t deeply desire that connection, I’m just too shy to put myself out there.

I can follow the familial line of severe shyness so I know where it comes from. My grandmother was even more shy than I am. But I just cannot overcome it.

Not everyone in my family is shy and I envy my siblings and family members that can casually start up a lighthearted chatty conversation with a casual acquaintance or even a complete stranger.  Try as I might, I cannot do it.

Helping an acquaintance feel, as I did, the actual loving arms of God Himself sent through the caring actions of others through her illness. #TexasHomesteader

Sharing My Life With My Loves

by Texas Homesteader ~

Spring is a beautiful time to live in Texas. After the dreary season of winter, Texas puts out all her beauty for spring. The skies over our ranch are amazingly blue, the grass turns a vibrant green and bright yellows and dainty whites start popping out in bloom.

Aaaahhhhh….

Since our kids all live in suburban environments it's lots of fun for them to come to the homestead and play in the country for a bit. #TexasHomesteader

Country Beauty Through A City Girl’s Eyes

Guest post by Ashley

I have always lived in the city.  My parents bought a beautiful stretch of country when I was just a young girl, but we still lived in the city.  They didn’t sustain themselves on the wealth of the land until I was grown and already moved across the United States, so this is all still relatively new to me.

Since I moved to North Carolina I only get to come out and visit about once a year and even then my time is stretched across Texas to try and visit all of my old friends and family. However this trip I was able to sit back and relax a little more, smell the country air, look at the little details and actually appreciate the things that my parents see every day. Things that are new, wondrous, and amazing to me is nothing but an old piece of equipment to them. So allow me to take you on a tour of the Homestead with what wondrous things these city eyes see.

It's a wondrous world in the country, especially when viewed through a city-girl's eyes. Come see & experience with me #TexasHomesteader
