Planting Potatoes For EASY Harvest!

by Texas Homesteader ~

Here in NE Texas it’s the time of year when many gardeners are thinking about planting those potatoes! I’m a big fan of growing potatoes, especially since they’re such an easy crop to grow.

In past years I’ve planted potatoes in a raised bed right in my garden. Of course that worked fine but this year I’ve decided to do something different.

Remember I’m a big fan of growing an Edible Landscape? Well not only will this different way of planting potatoes give me some effortless beautiful greenery on my back porch during the summer months but it will also help make harvesting those potatoes so easy.

C’mon, I’ll show ya!

I've planted potatoes in the ground, but this year I'm planning for not only a more bountiful harvest, but an easier one too! #TexasHomesteader

Dehydrating Fresh Spinach To Enjoy All Year Long!

by Texas Homesteader ~

I love fresh spinach, and I love that during early spring it produces so prolifically.  We like to eat as much spinach as we can while it’s fresh and crisp but I also want to preserve that delicious, healthy spinach to enjoy later in the season – way after the plants have bolted and are gone.  I experimented with dehydrating fresh spinach this year and I loved the results.  I wrote this piece for one of my favorite publications, Mother Earth News. C’mon y’all – check it out!

Homestead Hack: Repurposed Items As Plant Markers

by Texas Homesteader ~

Well, garden season is in full swing in NE Texas. It’s the season all gardeners have been dreaming about for weeks. Much work has gone into planning, seed-buying and dreaming.

One of the things I still needed for my garden was plant markers. I’d love to have an easy way to identify plants in their teeny-tiny stage as I’m strolling through the garden. But you know how strong my #UseWhatchaGot drive is!

Thankfully I’ve found an easy way to repurpose items I already have in my home to use for the actual plant markers. Using these markers helps me to remember what I planted where without having to come inside & look it up. Check it out!

I've found a cute and easy way to repurpose an item I already have in my home to use as veggie plant markers in my vegetable garden. #TexasHomesteader Continue reading

Vegetable Garden Update: May

by Texas Homesteader ~

Well, well, well – here we are in May.  Now here in NE Texas we’re in planting zone 8A so typically this time of year my garden is really starting to fire up, but this year’s garden has stumbled along due to both circumstances beyond my control as well as a comedy of errors.  Come along and see my successes and my…  well my not-quite-so successes.

Come along and see how our veggie garden here in NE Texas (zone 8A) is growing! What succeeded? What failed? #TexasHomesteader
