Preserving The Harvest: Pressure-Canning Corn

by Texas Homesteader~

I recently received quite a few ears of sweet corn but it was WAY more than we could eat fresh.   I wanted to preserve it so none would be wasted.

Our freezer is already pretty full so I was only able to toss in a couple of the whole ears for freezing, and then I went to researching pressure-canning options.

I was able to can the corn in little time. And since I was using my reusable canning lids I also created no waste.

The cobs went to the hog traps, the shucks went to the goats and the sweet corn goodness goes to us!

Preserving that corn by pressure canning means we'll be enjoying the sweet taste of summer even during the cold months of winter! #TexasHomesteader

Recipe: Homemade Mayonnaise In Minutes Using An Immersion Blender

by Texas Homesteader ~

I’ve made our homemade mayonnaise from scratch for years. An egg, some oil, lemon juice and salt is all it takes. Sometimes I’ll flavor the mayo too, adding garlic lends an aioli flavor. It’s all so easy to personalize to your family’s tastes when you make it yourself!

Frugal Low-Waste Chicken Feeder

by Texas Homesteader~

This is our first year to explore raising our own chickens. They have been so much fun to raise so far, and they are doing an amazing job of severely reducing the massive load of grasshoppers in our barn pasture, as well as almost eliminating the fly load on our calves when they’re confined here near the barn.

Truly organic pest control – I can get used to this!

Using items picked up second hand we constructed a large chicken feeder that doesn't waste feed. See how! #TexasHomesteader

Make Your Own Gentle Baby Wipes

by Texas Homesteader ~

When my children were babies I of course used baby wipes by the thousands! But now my children are grown and I have grandbabies to enjoy.

I’m in a different place in my life and thankfully the flurry and time-crunched period of my child-rearing days have slowed down.

But recently I found myself in need of a small supply of baby wipes. In my more time-crunched days I would have simply driven to the store and purchased what I needed. But now I hate to buy something I can easily make myself.

So onto the internet I went looking for solutions. There are several different ways to make wipes but I only needed a few for temporary needs.

So I sweet-talked RancherMan into surrendering some of his heavy paper shop towels – PERFECT!

I didn't have to run to the store for baby wipes, I made my own. This method was easy and I used items I already had in my home like coconut oil and baby wash! #TexasHomesteader

Making A Large Mirror Frame Using Reclaimed Wood

by Texas Homesteader ~

I needed a large barn wood mirror for our home, but large mirrors in that style are pretty pricy. So we purchased a large mirror at a thrift store and made our own using reclaimed wood from our beautiful 1880’s barn. I love the way it turned out!

We used reclaimed wood from our 1880's barn to make a beautiful mirror frame for our home. #TexasHomesteader
