Solar Cooking: Homemade Marinara Sauce

Is there much better than homemade fresh tomato marinara sauce?? It offers that taste that you just can’t get from the store shelves. But it’s true that you have to simmer it a bit to thicken it up and intensify all those delightful flavors.

It’s hot & humid here in NE Texas and simmering a pan on the stove for that length of time just didn’t appeal to me at all. Luckily I didn’t have to, the solar oven did a fantastic job and all the cooking heat was left outside where it belongs!

I love solar cooking, it keeps that cooking heat & humidity out of the kitchen. Today I'm making marinara sauce using NO EXTRA ENERGY! #TexasHomesteader

Recipe: MYO Flavored Mayonnaise

by Texas Homesteader ~

I’ve made our mayonnaise from scratch for years. An egg, some oil, lemon juice and salt is all it takes.

But RancherMan also sometimes asks me to flavor it with garlic for even more flavor. There’s so much flexibility when you’re making it yourself.

Frugal Low-Waste Chicken Feeder

by Texas Homesteader~

This is our first year to explore raising our own chickens. They have been so much fun to raise so far, and they are doing an amazing job of severely reducing the massive load of grasshoppers in our barn pasture, as well as almost eliminating the fly load on our calves when they’re confined here near the barn.

Truly organic pest control – I can get used to this!

Using items picked up second hand we constructed a large chicken feeder that doesn't waste feed. See how! #TexasHomesteader

Recipe: Apple Crumble Dessert From Home-Canned Apples In Syrup

by Texas Homesteader

Last fall I was blessed with several large boxes of apples from my aunt’s apple tree. I wanted to make sure they didn’t go to waste.

So I canned apples in syrup, applesauce, apple butter and apple cider, dehydrated apples and made and canned apple pie filling

FOR WEEKS!

Now I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor (oh my, I said ‘Fruits” of my labor. See what I did there??)

My favorite thing to make with these preserved apples is apple crumble dessert using the apple slices in light syrup. It’s delicious and comes together quickly for a delicious dessert when company surprises you with a visit.

Bada-boom, bada-bing and dessert is being served! Looks and tastes like you toiled away in the kitchen for hours. (shhhh…)

If you have canned apples in simple syrup, here's a delicious apple crumble dessert recipe that comes together quickly. #TexasHomesteader
