Did y’all know there’s such a thing as ‘Plastic-Free July‘? Me neither! But you know I hate plastic so I’m loving anything that has to do with eliminating more of it.  And it’s perfect timing since recent buying decisions had me looking for disposable utensils.

Wait a minute, WHAT Tammy??!  I thought you hated disposable things!

Yes, you’re correct… But we were hosting an outdoor family reunion I didn’t want my good flatware going outside & being lost or thrown away accidentally. And you KNOW I’m not gonna use anything plastic!

So I went online searching for options. I was intrigued to find compostable forks, knives and spoons. There are many manufacturers out there but PerfectWare utensils by Perfect Stix were actually WAXED. I knew right then & there that I’d be buying those!

Compostable Utensils? YES! These waxed utensils are inexpensive and fully compostable. Used for backyard BBQ's & weddings! #TexasHomesteader

Reducing Trash: Using My Handmade Basket When Traveling

by Texas Homesteader ~

I wrote recently about a basket. A handmade basket. A beautiful basket. MY basket.

You see, I’d wanted an open-top basket for a long time and I was really trying to find one at a thrift store. Not only would it be less expensive but I wanted it to be used instead of new. I always prefer to buy used whenever possible. It’s just an environmental thing for me.

But for months I was patient and searched for one. Alas, a suitable basket was nowhere to be found. Then one fateful day as RancherMan & I were strolling through an outdoor fair I saw her.

Oh she was a beauty! A handmade woven basket with leather handles. Deep sage greens and vibrant pink accents.

“How much?” I timidly asked.  “Forty Dollars” came the reply.

Wow. Forty dollars? That’s more than I was planning on spending. But oh how I loved her! And it was certainly worth that much, having been sturdily made.

Plus I love to support artists whenever possible. So I bought that beautiful basket with the bright pink accents, hoping I’d use it as much as I thought I would. And I’m pleased to say I have!

I love my handmade basket but will I use it as much as I think I would? Recently we took a traveling day-trip & it was used once again #TexasHomesteader

Using Natural Materials: Straw In The Garden

by Texas Homesteader ~

I like to use natural materials in my garden. Things such as straw, wood chips Dry Leaves or even grass mulch after RancherMan mows the lawn and bags the cut grass. (be sure to let that freshly-cut grass cure a bit before adding it close to your plants or it could burn them)

For instance, I have a grapevine that I’ve surrounded with three bales of straw. That straw serves a dual purpose. Its initial purpose is to protect my garden from encroaching bermuda grass.

Using Straw in the vegetable garden to preserve moisture. AND reduce weeds! Come see how a bale of straw does double duty. Nothing's wasted. #TexasHomesteader

Mother Earth News: 6 Easy Eco-Friendly Things I Did This Week

by Texas Homesteader ~

Y’all know my veins run green.  I’ve always had an environmental-awareness bend & I always try to tread gently on this big blue planet we live on.  I love Mother Earth & I want to protect her as much as I can.

I try to repurpose when I can, buy used instead of new, grow much of our food and try to keep my footprint light.  Now, I think most people desire to be environmentally sensitive but they might not know where to start.  But I found it’s not a difficult thing to do.  Sometimes it just takes slowing down and thinking about what you do.

Recently I wrote an article for Mother Earth News showing the 6 easy environmentally friendly things I incorporated into my week.  They’re all simple to do and easy to blend into your day.  Check it out!
