Self Sufficiency on a Texas Homestead

Homestead Hack: Separating Cream From Fresh Milk

by Texas Homesteader ~

As many of you know, recently I had to bring a mama cow into the barn recently. We had to milk out one of her quads since her newborn calf neglected it long enough for it to get very large. I didn’t want to risk her getting mastitis. And the longer the calf neglected it the larger it became.

Although our cows are not a dairy breed, she gave me about a half gallon of fresh milk from just that one quad! I’d never milked a cow before & I was pretty excited to get that fresh milk. So I sat out to put it all to good use. I decided to make homemade yogurt with it, but I had trouble skimming the cream easily. So I turned to my Facebook Followers to find out how they easily skimmed the cream from the milk.

I was looking for an easy way to separate cream from fresh milk. A spoon was too time consuming, a gravy separator was better, but check this Homestead Hack! #TexasHomesteader

Homesteading Blogs Sorted By State!

by Texas Homesteader ~

A few weeks ago a reader suggested that since cooking directions can change based on altitude and gardening plans can differ based on planting zones, someone should compile a list of homesteading / Simple Living blogs separated by the areas they reside in.

BRILLIANT, and challenge accepted!

Such a list is helpful for not only the reader of my Texas-based blog but also for all blog readers wherever they’re located.

So below you’ll find a list of awesome blogs separated by U.S. location and there’s even a spot to list some great blogs from our Canadian friends!

Canning Jar Storage Solution: Milk Crates & Homemade Dividers

by Texas Homesteader ~

I don’t want to store my empty canning jars in a way where the jars can clink together. That weakens the glass over time causing canning failures, etc.

I came up with a solution that protects the jars as well as simplify storage. See what we did!

Canning jars are now sold in half-sized boxes with no protective dividers. Come see my sturdy empty canning Jar Storage Solution #TexasHomesteader

Come With Me For A Day On the Homestead

by Texas Homesteader~

I’ve been asked before what it’s like to live and work on a NE Texas Homestead. It’s wonderful, it speaks to my heart, and it’s hard work.

When I had a job in the city my working environment was climate controlled – cool in the summer and comfy warm in the winter. There was no mud or weeds in my city job. No ticks or snakes. And I didn’t have to report to work until 8:00 a.m., and any time after 5:00 p.m. was my own to do as I wished. Oh, and weekends. And HOLIDAYS!

All of that has changed… for the better! Yes now I may be up before dawn to move some cows or out after dark mowing pastures by tractor headlight but DANG I love my life here! Why don’t you come along and see what a typical day on the Homestead is like?

Did you ever wonder what it's like to live & work on a NE Texas ranch? Come with me to see what a typical day looks like - we love it! #TexasHomesteader
