When we lived in the city I bought a *2-line extractable laundry line. I loved that thing – it gave me up to 98 feet of drying! RancherMan put a nail in a fence post so when I was doing laundry I’d bring out that extractable line & hang it on that nail. The lines pulled all the way to a nearby tree where I’d hook the two lines on the branches.
But when we moved here to our piece of paradise there were no privacy fences, nor any trees in our back yard. So we used a tether-ball pole as the anchor, and placed two decorative cast iron plant hooks on either side of the garage window.
But the tether-ball pole was… I dunno – UGLY! It served the purpose for several years but I wanted something a little more in step with our natural surroundings. It was replaced recently and you know my battle cry: Use Whatcha Got! (Almost all our Homestead Hacks use that battle cry.) Come see what we did.

I always cringed when RancherMan would fill my tractor with fuel. He’d try his best to be careful not to spill fuel, but it’s neigh impossible when the fuel lid is on the top of the tractor.
I found this fuel can design solves the problem of trying to hurry & get the spout into the fuel tank before spilling fuel. Love, love, LOVE THESE!

Well, garden season is in full swing in NE Texas. It’s the season all gardeners have been dreaming about for weeks. Much work has gone into planning, seed-buying and dreaming.
One of the things I still needed for my garden was plant markers. I’d love to have an easy way to identify plants in their teeny-tiny stage as I’m strolling through the garden. But you know how strong my #UseWhatchaGot drive is!
Thankfully I’ve found an easy way to repurpose items I already have in my home to use for the actual plant markers. Using these markers helps me to remember what I planted where without having to come inside & look it up. Check it out!

Mulch is a valuable asset in your garden. It preserves moisture, moderates soil temperatures and helps keep your plants healthy too.
But don’t assume your only option is to buy mulch! Check with your city, utility company or local extension agent & you could get it FREE!

I make my own light & sheer face powder using cornstarch and natural colorings such as cinnamon or cocoa. With all the hype these days about toxins in cosmetics, I’m happy to find a zero-waste solution that works well for me for just pennies.

Recently RancherMan & I traveled to a city about 4 hours away from our ranch so that we could attend the 2-day Mother Earth News Fair. I’d never been to their fair before and OH MY what a great time we had!!
But since it was a two day seminar and because it was an 8-hour round trip, we decided to get a hotel room close to our destination for the weekend. Now we prefer Comfort Inn Suites because we’ve found the quality at their hotels is pretty consistent. And we like the complimentary hot & hearty breakfast that their chain of hotel offers.
Although hotel stays can be notoriously wasteful, there are a few ways RancherMan & I have easily & comfortably reduced some of the waste that would typically be produced by a hotel stay.

By now we all know the drill – we sort through our trash and recycle all we can for a cleaner, healthier environment. Yea, that’s awesome! But as I’ve said many times before, although recycling is very important, it’s still just another way of dealing with trash. Wouldn’t it be better if we could reduce the trash – recyclable or not – that we produce in a typical day in our own homes? Luckily it’s easy to do!
Recently I wrote a piece for the Mother Earth News that gives 6 easy ways to move toward a more zero-waste lifestyle. Hey, if you can help the environment in an effortless way – why not?? Check it out.
