Summer is surely here, y’all. It’s HOT outside. So we’re mindful to get as many of our outside chores complete in the early hours as we can. And we take lots of breaks, drink lots of cold water and stay hydrated.

It’s been raining for weeks here in NE Texas. Everything is a muddy mess. EVERYTHING!

Yes, it’s true that we’ll be begging for this moisture when the summer months come. But whether it’s no rain or too much rain – neither extreme is desirable. I sure wish Mother Nature would get a little better moderated. But these extremes… Ugh.

RancherMan & I were talking one morning this week as we enjoyed our coffee. He remarked “How wonderful is it that we’re HERE?? That we don’t have to use the alarm clock to wake us with a startle each morning, that we don’t deal with traffic an unreasonable boss or angry co-workers??”

I must admit I feel the same. Our lives out here are magical. But as we started recounting how it’s indeed possible for us to live in this magical place, one thing came up again and again. Finances. We have to be careful with them. We’ve traded a systematic paycheck for one that comes when it comes. But we’ve also traded the corporate world to live HERE! Money’s tight for many – us included!  In our day-to-day activities RancherMan & I are always looking for ways to do what we do without spending unnecessary money.  I’ve always been pleasantly surprised at how easy it is.  But it’s true, you do have to keep your eyes open to be aware of options.  But once you get into that mindset it’s quite natural to do things in a way that makes the best use of the cash you have available to you.

As anyone who is self-employed can attest, being self employed requires a special money-management mindset.  Since leaving the corporate workplace, our work hours are longer and our pay is substantially smaller and not near as systematic. Make no mistake, money is tight at the Taylor Homestead!  But there’s no place I’d rather be and the benefits FAR outweigh any financial drawbacks.
