A Mama’s Love

Awwwww… a mother’s love. This is our bull calf born here on the ranch in March. He is the A.I. product of our most productive herd cow and a high-producing sire.  He’s got the same gentle disposition as his dam, one of the reasons she’s such a valuable part of our breeding herd. I love watching them in their daily lives.

Hereford Heifer

Calves on the homestead. #TexasHomesteader

It’s almost time for this pretty girl to be weaned. She was born here on the ranch in February, the A.I. result of our most productive herd cow and a powerfully-rated bull. We couldn’t be more pleased with this heifer. Good times @ the Homestead.

The Brutal Drought Continues

This brutal drought continues in Texas. #TexasHomesteader

The dry brittle grass crunches beneath my boots as I walk toward the Bermuda-grass pasture to survey the grass there. Today is the day I’ll move the girls, the south pasture needs a rest. A worried glance is cast at the blazing Texas August sky, looking for hope of moisture but seeing none.

With a sigh, the gate is opened and the cows are moved to the new grazing area, dry but still nutritious. I’m sure this scene is being played over and over throughout the parched dry plains this summer. Praying for rain!

Find Beauty In Your Work

Anyone that ranches for a living knows the work hours are long. It demands luck with the weather, hard work and an absolute love for what you do. #TexasHomesteader

Anyone that ranches for a living knows the input costs are high, the profit margins are low and the work hours are long and unforgiving. It demands luck with the weather, hard work and an absolute love for what you do.

How blessed am I that during the hot, dusty, bone-jarring work of mowing our pasture I get to take in so much beauty around me?? The bright fragrant yellow flowers delight the senses and I enjoy watching our cattle grazing in the distance, the calves dancing at their heels (deep contented sigh) Yes indeed, I love what I do here.

Drought and Mowing

The forecasters gave us the proverbial snowball’s chance of rain in our area so I jumped on the tractor to mow down the tall dried seed-head grasses in our south pasture. I’d like to give the grass a fighting chance of at least slight resurgence for early summer grazing. The sudden record heat & dry weather on the heels of the devastation of last year’s drought are enough to cause a rancher to cast a worried eye to the sky. But we got almost an inch of rain last night and now we’re enjoying a cool, rain-filled morning – love it!

Hereford Bull Calf

Recently we spotlighted our Hereford heifer, but today I’ll update on our Hereford bull calf. At just under 2 months he’s also doing extremely well. He is the AI product of dam Victoria. We’ve been very pleased with these offspring. Victoria will receive her final 2012 AI rebreeding procedure next week.
