Predator Guard To Keep Snakes Away From Our Purple Martin House

by Texas Homesteader ~

We love to watch the Purple Martin birds flying around our elevated birdhouse. See how we made a homemade predator guard for our martin house using an old chimney cap to keep the snakes away from the birds!

The Beautiful Bois D’Arc Tree

by Texas Homesteader~

Our ranch has many beautiful trees, but none that are also as functional as the Bois D’Arc tree.  The wood from this tree is highly valued for it’s rot-resistant qualities. And many ranchers use logs cut from this tree in their fence lines and barn beams.

My favorite thing about it though is the beauty in the wood itself as it ages. Many people have asked me to share a post about these beautiful trees so I’m obliging today.

The tree itself makes a beautiful shade tree, with gently arching branches. I’m showing a picture of it below, just to the right of the too-cute-for-words Hereford calf.  😉

Beautiful Bois d'Arc trees are plentiful on our NE Texas Homestead. The wood is rot resistant and very helpful on the homestead. #TexasHomesteader

Wild Hogs – Making The Best Of A Bad Situation

by RancherMan~

As anyone in the agriculture business knows whether it be farming or ranching, wild hogs are becoming a bigger problem by the day. They are prolific breeders, they are very hardy and have almost no natural enemy besides man. As an animal behaviorist will tell you they are one of the most intelligent creatures on earth.

Over the last decade they have learned to become nocturnal and learned what food is safe and which is not. They have also learned to avoid traps, making them very difficult to control in any way.
