I often prefer to be at home on New Year’s Eve because, well, I never really understood the point of it all. But this year we got to trek to the Dallas area to hang out with my family as well as a couple of friends. What a fun time we had!
RancherMan & I spent the night there so that we wouldn’t be on the road during the most dangerous night of the year. But early this morning I awoke to find RancherMan missing. I tiptoed downstairs to find him sitting alone in the living room – he was worried about the winter weather predicted to hit soon.
As much as I was hoping to hang out & visit with my family a little longer I hated to see the worry in his face. So we enjoyed a quick cup of coffee and then headed for home. We’re now safely back at the ranch, a warm fire blazing and a hot cup of tea at my side.

Soup weather for sure in Utah where we visited our son for Christmas (11 degrees & snowy). The day before we left I showed him & his fiancee how to make chicken soup from a rotisserie chicken carcass. He delivers for Fed Ex & some office ladies asked him if he had soup waiting for him at home–he told them I made him a pot. They said, “We love your Mom.”
We avoided NYE drunks by leaving on the 30th. I know how Rancher Man feels about traveling with storms on the way. We opted to leave after the roads were cleared from Christmas stormand before the predicted New Year’s Day storm. Back home in So Calif. on the 31st we had dinner with our other son & family, had a belated Christmas visit and home before 8PM.
New Year’s Day I made a pot of soup from a chicken carcass I had in the freezer.

Sounds like you got a lot of quality visitation in during the holidays. And the lesson you taught your son & his fiancee about rotisserie chicken-bone soup will stay with them forever & serve them well for keeping their food budget reasonable while allowing them to eat very well. It’s nice to have fun with family- we saw ours on New Year’s Day — glad you’re home safe. We worry about next day traffic too. Especially with winter weather– but the main thing are the drivers. People forget what a HANGOVER IS… It’s still drunk the next day.
Hope your new year is off to a good start. Did y’all get bad weather there? Ours was just rainy and cold- no ice. My brother lives in Cambell so I’m in the habit of checking temps there– we run anywhere from 6-10 degrees different depending on season!
We mainly got the drizzly stuff Patricia, but with periods of rain with temps hovering at 33 degrees. A little too close for comfort! But thankfully we made it home before much freezing on the main roadways. But as we sat in my brother’s living room drinking our coffee before we left we were watching the ice drops forming longer & longer on his trees so we knew there was the risk. And one thing we’ve learned is that most folks just don’t know how to drive on ice. You’re absolutely right – the main danger is always the other drivers! Especially when much of your drive is going to be a two-line highway with nothing but a painted white line between you and oncoming traffic. Texting & driving kills, but hungover texting & driving is doubly bad! Add that to slick roads & you’ve got some real potential trouble there. But now that 2015 is finally here – let’s kick this thing off! Make it a great one Patricia. 🙂 ~TxH~

This weather for New Years is something else. The rain was needed but not too thrilled about the cold temperatures. …..soup weather. Hubby brought home a chuck roast so I trimmed and cut it up for stew so will be making a nice big crockpot of homemade vegetable beef soup for the weekend.
Soup weather indeed Colleen. RancherMan & I enjoyed my version of Zuppa Toscana using many leftover dishes from the fridge needing to be used. Soup can sure warm your bones on a cold day. Looks like we’ll be having plenty of cold days coming up, I’ll be making endless soup so we’ll be supplied in hot lunches. Stay warm! ~TxH~
